Acute otitis media occurs when a cold, allergy, or upper respiratory infection, and the presence of bacteria or viruses lead to the accumulation of pus and mucus behind the eardrum, blocking the Eustachian tube. Hearing testing should be performed for adults complaining of tinnitus, dizziness or hearing loss. You will learn why ears develop chronic fluid and how this can be prevented. You will learn why only certain people have recurrent ear fluid, what allergies are, and how allergies affect the middle ear. In six patients whose allergies were treated for a time the fluid cleared, but as soon as they quit their allergy shots or they ate the foods that made them congested, their ears filled up again, so I judged the treatment to have failed. As a result, patients with ear disorders may be unable to hear sounds properly, or they may feel dizzy. It is connected to the back of the nose by the Eustachian tube. The fluid behind the eardrum may block sound, so mild temporary hearing loss can happen, although it may not be obvious. Patients must allow time for treatment (if required) to take effect. A properly functioning eustachian tube allows gas diffusion which equalizes middle-ear pressure with that of the environment. An improperly functioning eustachian tube can result in negative middle-ear pressure.
